The VVI community gathered in Tampere — photographers and visual storytellers from all over Finland.

Visuaaliviestinnän Instituutti (VVI) — the Institute of Visual Communication — is a Finnish school of photography and visual communication based in Tampere. We have trained photographers and creative professionals since 1969, which makes us one of the longest-standing photography schools in Finland. Our students come from all over the country, and studies are designed to fit alongside work — including for career-changers taking their first professional steps in photography.

What we teach

We provide preparatory training for the official Finnish vocational qualifications in the media sector: the Further Vocational Qualification in Media (the photographer’s path) and the Specialist Vocational Qualification in Media, as well as apprenticeship training in cooperation with Tampere Vocational College TREDU. Alongside the qualification programmes we run ProWay, a series of short professional courses on photography, video and AI imaging tools, and intensive coaching programmes in photographic expression and the mastery of light.

Our approach combines two things that rarely meet in one school: craftsmanship and business. Students learn to master light, expression and technique — and to build a sustainable creative practice around their skills. Teaching happens in small groups, led by working professionals.

International cooperation

We are open to international partnerships — from European education projects to visiting workshops and artist exchanges. If you represent a photography school, a cultural organisation or a vocational institute interested in cooperation, we would be glad to hear from you.
